we first heard DJ BISH over a cracklin' signal that i found out was being broadcast from a tower block down in deepest shadwell. it was about 1994 and the radio station was CHILLIN FM.
in amongst the solid emerging techno was this coule of hours of distinctly different sounds coming from the speakers of our home stereo. i reckon DJ BISH was maybe the first pirate DJ that i heard playing ambient and very left of centre music. he was playing industrial, neubauten, hippy music like ozrics, TG, PTV, nurse with wound as well as caberet voltaire and ebm in amongst things we'd now call ambient house and electronica. overlays of backwards voices and weird clips and strange adverts. total drugs music going into a snide transmitter high above the rainy street, held together by gaffa tape and prayer and sent direct to, what i thought was myself only. i connected with him. i sent pager messages and eventually we became friends. meeting at places like KNOWLEDGE, LOST & SABRES. eventually we went seperate ways as you do and lost touch towards the end of the century. i knew he'd reverted to type and had bought a boat and had disappeared to the canals of the country with his girlfriend and child. and that was a good thing.
social media brought us back into each others orbit just as i was shifting my position on practically everything in the world. he's now a lone wanderer, still travelling the channels of our beautiful countryside in a small solar powered wooden vessel, making noises, listening to more music than the gods, playing in bands and generally refusing to let age & the perceived decline of acid house dissuade him form the path. apparently he's not lonely as on his travels he is accompanied by a number of small elfin creatures with really large eyes and greenish skin that always enhance his mood when and where needed.. maybe isolation has addled his brain more than he lets on but he's been prodding me to do a label, so maybe being addled is the way to carry on.
